My First Fly Fishing Guide Trip Report January 7, 2012

Asheville Area Fly Fishing Report January 7, 2012

I was so busy having fun I forgot to take photographs, but I will try to paint the picture for you. I picked my client up around 10:30 in Asheville, NC. We drove to a medium sized Delayed Harvest River approximately 45 minutes away from Asheville. Our goal was to take advantage of the warm days we had been having and get four hours of fishing during the warmest part of the day. Despite the warm 50 degree temperatures there was a little ice on the edges of the river. We drove the entire stretch of river to scope out where other anglers were and where we cold fish. Surprisingly there were five other groups of fly anglers along various parts of the river. Fortunately my favorite stretch was open so we parked and geared up. The first hole we fished had a couple of spooky fish hanging int he rear of the pool. No Dice. We moved up to the rushing water at the top and got two fish instantly on our double nymph rig. We fished somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of a mile of river and found the same story in almost all of the holes. All in All we had a great day. Most of the holes yielded two or three fish. One was loaded. We landed about a 50/50 mix of rainbow trout and brown trout in the 8-12 inch range. A great winter afternoon. I am much happier to be a fly fishing guide than a ski guide this winter.

If you have the itch to fish give me a call or shoot me an E-mail. Winter fishing is a fun experience.
