Great Afternoon on the Davidson with Wofford People

I had the pleasure of guiding Palmer and Davidson on the Davidson River a few weeks ago. The fly fishing was great and Palmer landed the NC grand slam (Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Brown Trout). Davidson lost the Brook Trout at the net. That is the first time I have seen two people hook two grand slams on the Davidson. Good work guys.

First November Trip on The Davidson

TJ from ORVIS Charlotte and I fished the Davidson River at the Fish Hatchery today. We had a great day. Our morning was cold and so was the fishing. We did catch the trophy of the day before lunch, but we caught a lot more fish in the PM. TJ's big fish was 20 inches! It was an awesome fish, we just wish we could have weighed it. Here are some pictures. For the past two weeks the Davidson River has been fishing so well. I am really looking forward to every day I fish there right now. If you have ever wanted to see it fish well, you need to call me immediately. Lets go!

Last October trip on the Davidson

Annie and I fished the Davidson River for about two hours last week. Annie caught this rainbow on a dry fly. It was one of four fish that ate on top. We caught about a dozen more nymphing the riffle above the Davidson River Fish Hatchery bridge.

Autumn Splendor

Who doesn't complain about the leaves on the water during the fall? It is great to learn casting techniques for getting through leaves, but we are always left reminiscing about leaf free spring time drifts. The trade off is awesome scenery and sometimes a cool photograph that makes us think twice about why we go.

This is a client from last weekend’s first fish. It was one of our smaller fish of the day, but the photo made me think about how much I appreciated the beauty of North Carolina Mountains in the fall.

That is enough romanticizing. I need to get back to my fly tying vise so I am ready for this weekend.

Watauga River Tailwater Fishing is On Fire

I took Kevney Dugan from Bend, OR on a float fly fishing trip down the Quality Section of the Watauga River. We hooked a ton of fish on dries and nymphs. One was a nice brown trout on a midge nymph that we managed to stop and take a picture of. We got another nice rainbow that ate a caddis dry fly, but was in water too fast to stop in. The past two weeks up there have been very consistent on the Watauga River.

Quick Tuckaseegee Reconnaissance Trip

I hadn't fished the Tuckaseegee since last spring so I went down to Dillsoboro for a few hours to find some fish and make sure I knew what flies they would eat. The hole we picked to fish ended up having a good number of fish in it and Annie and I hooked about a dozen fish pretty quickly. We fished a double nymph rig w/ a variety of midges trailing an egg. Both the fishing and the weather were great. Unfortunately we couldn't stay long, but I will be back on the Tuck with some of you soon.
The leaves up here are absolutely gorgeous right now! No better time to be fly fishing in NC or TN.

South Holston Streamers and Blue Winged Olives

Fishing on the South Holston was pretty tough in the morning. We fished streamers and scratched out some solid fish. The afternoon/evening prouduced an awesome blue winged olive hatch that brought a ton of fish to the surface. We landed lots of fish in a short time period on blue wing duns. Awesome fishing. Thanks to TJ Roy and Jason Bryant from ORVIS Charlotte for coming and fishing with me.
Fall fly fishing on the tailwaters is awesome.

East Fork French Broad

Annie and I fished the East Fork of the French Broad for the first time Oct. 3. The river was busy as expected opening weekend, but fishing was great. We fished for a few hours and caught plenty of fish taking turns every other fish. We fly fished two spots, the first was the most produtive, but the second had a huge rainbow trout that I am definately going after again. Awesome spot that I look forward to taking some of you to see.

NC Delayed Harvest Opens This Friday

Get ready for some great NC Delayed Harvest fly fishing. Starting Friday we will get a ton more wade fishing options with great fish populations. This is an awesome time to go fly fishing. Call me or shoot me an E-mail to book a trip, or get the low down on current conditions. After all, Asheville is the nucleus of the greatest concentration of NC trout fishing.

Jackson Hole One Fly 2010

I made my third Jackson Hole One Fly appearance this September with my good buddy Elliot Gerson and his wife Francis. The team name is the Horse Creek Hookers, named after the creek the Gersons live on in Jackson. We had a great time fishing and seeing people in the Jackson fishing community. I never take time to take pictures while fishing the tournament, but below are some pictures of my practice days. I fished with Charles Kempe of World Cast Anglers on day one (see him in last picture) and with Jim Hickey, owner, of World Cast Anglers on day two. Great fishing on the South Fork of the Snake both days. Pretty phenominal actually. In my four years of fishing out there those days would have been in the top ten. It was about as relaxed as trout fishing gets. Those cutties were super fired up to eat big stoneflies, and didn't mind chasing them downstream. Check out the One Fly and World Cast Anglers links below.

August2010 French Broad Smallies

Old photos from late August on the French Broad in Asheville. We threw flies and spinning tackle and caught some nice fish. The fish were still hot and spooky back then, but now are cooperating much better. The last fish was really beautiful. Perfect smallmouth markings.

Watauga River Float Trip August

Doubles, Doubles on Dries, Beetle Eats, Caddis Eats, Nice Fish Eats, what isn't getting eaten. Water has been super clear and we aren't getting as many fish, but we are catching them every way possible. In the past couple of days the water has gotten good and cloudy so fishing is improving, but nothing is better than getting them on top. We floated and Fly Fished the Watauga River in Watauga, TN. Great day with great weather. Summer dry fly fishing is on.

Watauga River Dry and Dropper Fishing

We got out of the boat and did a little wading at the bottom of the ledges on the Watauga River in TN. Fishing was good, but not easy. We got fish on lots of different dry flies and they ate midge droppers well too. The Watauga River rarely dissapoints. We had lots of rising trout to work on.

50th Birthday Party Float Trips Part II

These are a few more Watauga River Fly Fishing pictures.

50th Birthday Party Float Trips Part I

Hobson family 50th birthday party, Fly Fishing on the Watauga River. We had four boats and had excellent accomodations at the Watauga River Lodge. Nancy caught her first fish both on nymphs and dry flies, and is now hooked. It was a great time shared by three generations of the family, and fly fishing was a great way to celebrate a birthday.
